Monster Kid Radio #249 - Meet Monster Kid/Filmmaker Joshua Kennedy, plus holiday greetings!

This week's Monster Kid Radio guest just had one of his movies accepted into next year's Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival, but before that happens, he spends some time with us here on the podcast. Joshua Kennedy is a film student who's been making waves in the retro monster film community, and in this week's episode, he and Derek talk about his background (he was a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award nominee - when he was 15!), his movies, and his favorite Hammer actress. We also play a round of the Classic Five! You'll get all this and a batch of holiday greetings from previous Monster Kid Radio guests.

Monster Kid Radio #248 - Dark Intruder and Ken Johnson

This week's movie was featured on last week's Holiday Gift Guide, and this week, Derek will talk a bit more about 1965's Dark Intruder (dir. Harvey Hart). He doesn't do it alone, though. He's joined by frequent horror convention attendee and horror podcast connoisseur Ken Johnson. After this breezy chat about this Leslie Nielsen(!) horror flick - and a round of the Classic Five - we'll hear from Tony Wendell from The Gigantic Project about the recent MKR episodes covering a couple of kaiju films.

Monster Kid Radio #241 - Island of Lost Souls with Michael Legge (Dr. Dreck)

Are we not monster kids? Michael Legge (aka Dr. Dreck) joins Derek this week to talk about one of the good doctor's favorite horror films. Are we not monster kids? The two of them tackle 1932's Island of Lost Souls (dir. Erle C. Kenton). Are we not monster kids? Along the way, Michael and Derek touch on other cinematic versions of the H. G. Wells' novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, but their focus remains on the first (and best) adaptation of this science fiction classic. (Can you guess who hasn't read the original novel?) Plus, FEEDBACK.

Somebody Needs a Doodle (or Happy Birthday Bela!)

Has Google ever done a Google Doodle celebrating Bela Lugosi's birthday? If not, you'd think with his birthday being barely a week-and-a-half from Halloween, it would be a no-brainer. Whether or not Google chooses to celebrate the master, Monster Kid Radio's Derek is recognizing birthday boy Bela today by running down some of his favorite Lugosi performances in no particular order:

Ygor - Son of Frankenstein/Ghost of Frankenstein. Derek recently revealed that Ygor is one of his favorite Jack Pierce make-up designs, and while Pierce's work is without equal, Lugosi's performance is certainly as responsible for the success of that character. That Ygor was originally written as a much smaller part in Son of Frankenstein is unfathomable at this point. Lugosi steals the show. His Ygor in Ghost of Frankenstein is still enjoyable, even if he is a little cleaned up a little bit.

Dr. Paul Carruthers - The Devil Bat. As much as he's associated with playing vampires (and a very specific vampire at that), Lugosi also shines in the role of the mad scientist. The Devil Bat is one of the best of the poverty row films, and that's almost solely because of Lugosi's varied performance as the scientist driven to guilty revenge.

Dr. Vitus Werdegast - The Black Cat. At first blush, one might think Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were miscast in this film. Karloff as the villain? Lugosi as the sort of hero? That doesn't make any sense, does it? Oh, it does in this film. It's fascinating to see both of these titans of terror play against type, and it's a shame Lugosi didn't have more opportunities to play characters like this. (Granted, Werdegast does take things a bit too far when he finally has his way with Karloff's Poelzig.)

Von Housen - Vampire Over London (My Son, The Vampire). Is this high art? No. Does Lugosi have an opportunity to disspell the myth that he couldn't handle comedy? Definitely. Additionally, there are shades of mad scientist here as well which always makes Bela watchable.

Count Dracula - Dracula. Is there anything that hasn't already been said about his performance in this groundbreaking film? (Will you be seeing this film when it plays in the theater this month courtesy of Fathom Events? Derek can't wait!)

Clearly there are more films in Lugosi's filmography worthy of extra attention and/or praise. What are some of your favorites?

Monster Kid Radio #240 - Strephon Taylor and Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters

The work of Jack Pierce is undeniably one of the cornerstones of what we as monster kids LOVE, and while we here at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters might know a few things about the man, we could certainly stand to learn more. Fortunately filmmaker Strephon Taylor is here to help us with his new documentary Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters. This new release from November Fire relates Pierce's early life, his incredible career, and even some of his activities away from the make-up chair. After learning a bit about Stephon's background as a monster kid, and a lot more about Jack Pierce, Derek and Strephon go over their top three favorite Jack Pierce make-up designs. Also, Derek mentions two upcoming Monster Kid Radio Crashes happening in the Portland area!

Monster Kid Radio #239 - The Inner Sanctum Mysteries with Paul McComas

For the first time, Derek recorded an episode of Monster Kid Radio with a REAL LIFE PERSON (he's not related to!) at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters when Paul McComas dropped in during his recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. As one of the biggest fans of Lon Chaney, Jr., ANY of us know, Derek knew Paul was the PERFECT guest to discuss the films Calling Dr. Death (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Weird Woman (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Dead Man's Eyes (dir. Reginald Le Borg), The Frozen Ghost (dir. Harold Young), Strange Confession (dir. John Hoffman), and Pillow of Death (dir. Wallace Fox) - the Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Some of these movies are great. Some . . . leave a bit to be desired. Come along for the Chaney ride with Derek and (Birthday Boy) Paul as they pick apart the films, and take some delightful Lon, Jr., sidetracks along the way. Frequent MKR Guest Dr. Gangrene Puts Safety First This Halloween Season

Shackle Island Studios and Red Headed Revolution Pictures have unveiled their newest Public Safety Film, Happy Halloween With Dr. Gangrene. The new short film features Larry Underwood as Dr. Gangrene listing a number of safety tips to pint sized trick-or-treaters. The safety film was written by Larry Underwood and directed by Cameron McCasland. It was filmed in Middle Tennessee and features McCasland's young children Roxie & Marie McCasland as well as Jessica and Joseph Auguon Drake Jr. whom McCasland had previously worked with on other projects. The poster for the short was designed by J. Kyle Kelly at Villain Place in Nashville, TN. Kelly also shared shooting duties and editing on the project. The cartoon image of Dr. Gangrene is courtesy of artist Jeff Carlson.

Underwood said of the project, “Halloween is a magical time of year, and we want kids to have fun and be safe out there. You know what they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or candy, as the case may be.”

This new public safety film follows in a long line of shorts from collaborators McCasland & Underwood. Their "Go Green With Dr. Gangrene" series ran for several years and received praise from the governor of Tennessee and the Nashville City Council. It also garnered national attention, picking up awards from the AEGIS awards, Ava Awards, MarCom Awards, Blingy Awards, The Accolade Competition, The DV Awards, a Public Service award from the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards, and four Emmy nominations from the Midsouth Chapter of the National Television Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Happy Halloween With Dr. Gangrene will air on The CW network as well as the NECAT network locally in Nashville, which currently airs re-reruns of the television program "Dr. Gangrene Presents." It will also be screening at a number of Halloween-themed events in October hosted by Dr. Gangrene, including the rock n' roll extravaganza Dr. Gangrene's Horror Hootenanny.

In addition to this new short film, Underwood & McCasland are helping fans celebrate Halloween by making their 2010 Emmy nominated made for television movie The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special available to stream for free during the month of October on the Dr. Gangrene YouTube channel. The half-hour comedy also features New England's Penny Dreadful and the legendary Count Gore DeVol.

2015 has been a banner year for the horror film making duo. Underwood's Dr. Gangrene was inducted into the Horror Host Hall of Fame during Horrorhound Weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. His web series The Fantastic Films of Vincent Price just completed its 44th episode, and he picked up his third Rondo Statuette this time for his "Tales From The Lab" blog. McCasland was named Indie Director Of The Year at the 2015 Indieville TV Awards. His feature length slasher film The Lashman was the recipient of a Matchflick Flicker Award for Best Throwback film. His newly released short film Tailypo recently picked up honors at the Imaginarium Film Festival. And he has also picked up hardware for his video producing work on several music industry related projects including a Communicator award for his documentary I Heard The Devil Say My Name Out Loud

Potential change to this week's episode

Last week, I stated that Episode 238 would be all about the Inner Sanctum Mysteries, and would feature returning guest Paul McComas. With the HP Lovecraft Film Festival this past weekend, I find myself needing to change things up and running the Inner Sanctum Mysteries show w/ Paul for Episode 239, leaving 238 for the HPL Film Fest.

Monster Kid Radio #235 - The War of the Gargantuas with Tony Wendell (The Gigantic Project)

Who will survive The War of the Gargantuas (dir. Ishirō Honda)? Derek? This week's guest Tony Wendell? YOU??? Listen to this episode of Monster Kid Radio to find out! SPOILER ALERT - while sidetracking about Ultraman, Godzilla's Revenge, Godzilla vs. Megalon, and a number of other topics, Derek and Tony do a pretty good job of spoiling The War of the Gargantuas. Also, Stephen D. Sullivan leaves more feedback regarding his previous voicemail about Doctor Who, and the next Monster Kid Radio Crash is announced.

A slight change to Monster Kid Radio

As mentioned in Episode #234 of Monster Kid Radio, I'm making a small change to the podcast starting next week. Instead of there being two episodes a week of the podcast, there will be one.

Listeners will not lose any content. Instead of having the week's topic split into two episodes, the week's singular episode will contain the entire conversation with that week's guest/about that week's topic in one episode. The episode length will increase to accommodate the entire chat.

Nothing else about your regular dose of Monster Kid Radio content is changing. The Facebook page and the Patreon page have been updated to reflect this change.

Stay tuned! There are some EXCITING things in the works at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters!

Monster Kid Radio #234 - The Return of the Vampire, the returning Ron Nelson

Ron Nelson continues his stay on Monster Kid Radio as he and Derek wrap up their conversation about the film The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers). Spoiler alert - Ron and Derek love this film! During their discussion, they make if-you-squint-you-might-see-them-too links from this film to The Monster Squad and even kinda-sorta Star Wars. Also, Stephen D. Sullivan calls in to drop some serious Doctor Who knowledge. At the end of this episode, Derek makes a special announcement about the future of Monster Kid Radio.

Monster Kid Radio #233 - Ron Nelson and The Return of the Vampire

Derek welcomes Ron Nelson to the podcast to talk about what could easily have been Bela Lugosi's second turn at playing Dracula on the big screen . . . except it really wasn't. (Call off your lawyers, Universal!) It's The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers). Before diving into this 1943 monster mash-up from Columbia, Derek and Ron talk a bit about their similar history as monster kids growing up in the VHS era. Also, Derek responds to some (green) slimy listener feedback regarding Episodes #229 and #230.

Monster Kid Radio #231 - Who's Who With Casey Criswell, Doctor Who, and Invading Daleks

It's finally happening. Casey Criswell, the man of many podcasts, is joining Derek for an episode of Monster Kid Radio. The movie on deck? 1966's Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 A. D. (dir. Gordon Flemyng). Derek makes the shocking admission that he's never seen an episode of any incarnation of Doctor Who (even though he's had friends over the years give him DVDs of Who to watch!), Casey makes a few jokes, and together, they may just succeed in defeating the Daleks. Or, at least, this movie's version of the Daleks. Casey breaks down the main differences between the Who-isms in the film and the television series.
