Monster Kid Radio #059 - War of the Worlds with Tracey Morris - Part One

It's the end of the year, and the Martians have arrived! But that's okay - so has Disney, Indiana's Tracey Morris! Tracey returns to Monster Kid Radio this week to talk about the classic scifi alien invasion film The War of the Worlds (dir. Byron Haskin). What revelation does Derek make about himself in this episode? What 8-track did Tracey listen to growing up? And how do the special effects in this adaptation of this HG Wells' classic hold up today?

Monster Kid Radio #058 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, with Scott Morris - Part Two

Santa Claus isn't done conquering the Martians, and we're not done conquering this movie. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is on the way to becoming one of Derek's Christmas favorites, and you have returning guest Scott Morris to thank for that. Scott picked the film this week, and in Part Two of our discussion, he lists a few of his favorite scenes from the movie and shares with us just how deep his love of SCCtM really goes.

Monster Kid Radio #057 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, with Scott Morris - Part One

On Kimar, on Voldar, on Bomar, and Girmar! On Hargo, on Momar, on Rigna, on Dropo! We're deep in the holiday spirit here at Monster Kid Radio thanks to returning guest Scott Morris. He brought the movie Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (dir. Nicholas Webster) to the podcast this week, and he and Derek manage to get the film's theme song out of their heads long enough to talk about the film. We also have a few more holiday greetings from previous Monster Kid Radio guests.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Monster Kid Radio #056 - Christmas Greetings and Visiting Krampus

Last Friday the 13th, the Portland's 13th Door Haunted House threw open their doors to celebrate Christmas . . . with Krampus. Derek braved the haunted halls of the 13th Door that night, and will take you with him during the near ten-minute walk through. Before that, though, various guests of Monster Kid Radio past (and a few listeners) have called in their holiday greetings for everyone to hear!

Monster Kid Radio #053 - Cheesy B-Movies with Tom Biegler, Part Two

A monster that looks like it was made out of papier mâché, a were-jellyfish, and John Carradine - these are just a few of the topics brought up in Part Two of Derek's cheesy monster movie discussion with monster kid sculptor Tom Biegler. This time around, some of the movies Tom mentions are films Derek's never seen before, but next week for his birthday, Derek will sit down to watch at least one of them (we're looking at you, were-jellyfish). (Speaking of your host's birthday, since next week Derek is celebrating his 40th birthday, Monster Kid Radio's schedule will change a little bit. Instead of a show on Tuesday and Thursday, there will be only one show on Wednesday.) Also on today's episode, the winner of the Tom Biegler Island of Terror sculpt is announced!

Monster Kid Radio #052 - Cheesy B-Movies with Tom Biegler, Part One

Quick! Get some wine to go with this week's cheese! This week on Monster Kid Radio, Derek is joined by returning guest and sculptor Tom Biegler for a discussion of our favorite cheesy monster movies. We love 'em, but let's be honest. There's a solid layer of cheese on some of these flicks, which is a testament to the film's worth because we wouldn't love them any other way! During their discussion, John Agar is mentioned a few times (John Agar Rules!), and Derek tends to sidetrack a bit, but Tom keeps him on course. (And don't forget our 50-Review Challenge!)

Monster Kid Radio #051 - Scott & Tracey Morris' Monster Mania, Part Two

Last month, Scott and Tracey Morris left Disney, Indiana for a monster-filled weekend at the Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, Indiana. The event? Monster Mania. The movies? The Invisible Man (dir. James Whale), The Mummy (dir. Karl Freund), Frankenstein (dir. James Whale), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold). The host of this podcast? EXTREMELY jealous. Most of these movies were movies neither Scott nor Tracey had seen before seeing them at the Artcraft, and in Part Two of their Monster Mania debrief, they'll share their first time thoughts about these films and they even put up with Derek gushing about Creature...! Also, Derek reminds listeners how they can enter the drawing for the original sculpt of the Island of Terror silicates created and donated by previous Monster Kid Radio guest Tom Biegler. Monster Kid Radio #050 - Scott & Tracey Morris' Monster Mania, Part One

Last month, Scott and Tracey Morris (the high high-muckety-mucks of Disney, Indiana and returning guests to Monster Kid Radio) went to the Artcraft Theater's Monster Mania event in Franklin, Indiana. The 2-day event featured 35mm print screenings of six classic Universal monster films, and most of these films were first time viewings for Scott and Tracey. In Part One of their Monster Mania debrief, they tell Derek about the Artcraft and the two movies they watched on Day One of the event - Dracula (dir. Tod Browning) and The Wolf Man (dir. George Waggner). Also in this week's episode, Derek reminds listeners how they can enter the drawing for the original sculpt of the Island of Terror silicates created and donated by previous Monster Kid Radio guest Tom Biegler. I Walked with a Zombie (dir. Jacques Tourneur). Remakes. Blaxploitation films. Sound and soundtracks. The effectiveness of black-and-white film on a silver screen. Wes Craven. George A. Romero. And Paul McComas' award-winning books. All these topics (and more!) will get at least a mention on this episode of Monster Kid Radio! Paul and Derek continue to talk about I Walked with a Zombie, and using this incredible film as a starting off point, their discussion takes an informative, winding trainride through all the topics mentioned above! Monster Kid Radio #048 - Paul McComas Walked with a Zombie, Part One

He's back on Monster Kid Radio, and this time, he brought a zombie with him . . . or did he? Author Paul McComas (Fit for a Frankenstein, Planet of the Dates, Unforgettable: Harrowing Futures, Horrors, & (Dark) Humor) joins Derek to talk about the Val Lewton 1943 classic I Walked with a Zombie (dir. Jacques Tourneur). Derek's background as a former zombie movie podcaster has brought him in contact with this movie before, and Paul's love of voodoo films has made I Walked with a Zombie a mainstay in their DVD players, and in Part One of their chat about the film, you'll find out why.

We return to the Island of Terror (dir. Terence Fisher) with guest Tom Biegler for Part Two of our discussion of this British sci-fi horror . . . can we call it a classic? Yes, I think we can! In addition to concluding our talk about the film, Tom also shares more about his artistic process, and we announe a new contest in which YOU can win an original diorama featuring the silicates from Island of Terror (thanks, Tom, for creating and donating this one-of-a-kind sculpture!). We go over a Facebook message, and Derek makes sure all us monster kids know about some new projects from previous guests on the show.

Monster Kid Radio #044 - Tom Biegler and the Island of Terror, Part One

Monster kid and sculptor Tom Biegler returns to Monster Kid Radio this week, and he's bringing a couple of silicates with him! (That's his sculpture in the episode image!) Before Monster Kid Radio was launched, Tom showed Derek a movie called Island of Terror (dir. Terence Fisher), and that movie quickly became one of Derek's favorite non-Hammer Peter Cushing films. Tom not only introduced Derek to this amazing movie, but he's also about to share another amazing piece of original art with one lucky Monster Kid Radio listener! That's his diorama sculpt in the episode image this time around.

Last Sunday night, he went to one of Portland's premiere haunted house attractions - FrightTown! Derek didn't want to tackle this three-attractions-in-one alone, so he met with a group to take on the scares served up by Baron Von Goolo and company! (Special thanks to Ray and Tom!)

Warren), and she escaped the hands of fate to appear on the podcast this week! In Part One of Derek's interview with Jackey, they talk about her art and theater background, how she got involved in Manos..., and how Manos... came back into her life after many years of living Manos...-free (through no fault of her own!). Monster Kid Radio #037 - Monster Kid Friendly Disney with Scott Morris - Part Two

What Disney film did Derek's fifth grade teacher show him . . . that TERRIFIED him? Find out in this episode of Monster Kid Radio when Scott Morris joins him for Part Two of their discussion of monster kid friendly Disney films. This time, Scott and Derek go over their top three scary Disney films. After getting scared by Mickey Mouse (for real!), Derek heads to Portland's Hollywood Theatre for a screening of 1974's The 7 Brothers Meet Dracula (dir. Roy Ward Baker, Cheh Chang). This was a Monster Kid Radio Crash, and Derek ran into a familiar face after the show - Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland. Also in this episode, Derek checks out a television show from the 70s that ran by two different names - "Ghost Story" and "Circle of Fear." This series was recently released on DVD by Sony, and Derek will let you know if you need some Winston Essex in your life. Derek will also let you know if you need the movie Dawn of Dracula (dir. Blake Powell) in your life when he talks about the feature-length film from the gang from Midnite Mausoleum. Marlena Midnite and Robyn Graves aren't hosting horror movies anymore - now they're in one, and they've brought all their charm, humor, and quirkiness to this homage to 1970s Eurohorror. This is a PACKED episode of Monster Kid Radio, and if you listen close, you might hear an announcement about the Pacific Northwest Theatrical premiere of The Giant Spider (dir. Christopher R. Mihm).

Monster Kid Radio #034 - Rich Chamberlain, Bela Lugosi, and Boris Karloff - Part One

Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff are two of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio, and for good reason. Their films - especially the films they were in together - strike a strong chord in the hearts and minds of monster kids everywhere, and the Monster Movie Kid Rich Chamberlain returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about these two titans of classic terror. Were they more alike than some have led us to believe? Which one became a US citizen? Who did more radio work? Who had more wives? Rich and Derek talk about these two men in Part One of MKR's look at the sometimes parallel paths of Karloff and Lugosi.

Monster Kid Radio #033 - Scott & Tracey Morris at HHW's Super 8 Film Festival

Scott and Tracey Morris (both previous guests on Monster Kid Radio and high mucky-mucks of Disney, Indiana), attended HorrorHound Weekend Indianapolis earlier this month and attended the Ray Harryhausen Super-8 Tribute Show (and a bonus show!) hosted by We Are Movie Geeks' Tom Stockman. Since Derek has multiple medical issues this week, Scott and Tracey are covering the Super-8 show on this week's only episode of Monster Kid Radio. HUGE thanks to them both for picking up the slack while Derek deals with some health and automobile issues.

Attaboy, Chris! Derek and Chris McMillan (The Shadow Over Portland) continue their look at 1966's The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (dir. Alan Rifkin) in this is the movie in the MKR crosshairs this week. Monster Kid Radio #031 - Chris McMillan and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Part One

The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan is back on Monster Kid Radio, and this time he brings . . . Don Knotts? The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (dir. Alan Rifkin) is the movie in the MKR crosshairs this week. Does the former Barney Fife bring the spooky? Does this "count" as an "old, dark house" movie? Why exactly IS Don Knotts character called "Mr. Chicken?" Chris and Derek answer some of these questions in this episode.

Monster Kid Radio #025 - Larry Underwood (Dr. Gangrene) and Vincent Price, Part One

According to a recent Monster Kid Radio Facebook Group poll, the listeners wanted to hear Derek go over his list Top Three Vincent Price Movies list, but Derek didn't want to do it alone. Author and horror host Larry Underwood (Dr. Gangrene) returns to the show to join Derek and talk about Vincent Price's career and his interests apart from being the lovable boogeyman he's known as to all us monster kids. They also talk about the first time they were exposed to Vincent Price and Larry shares how Vincent Price has influenced him as a monster movie fan. This is Part One of the Vincent Price episode; Part Two (which features the actual Top Three Movies list) will appear in two days in Episode #026. Monster Kid Radio #024 - Tom Biegler ate the mushrooms of Matango, Part Two

Derek continues his chat with artist and monster kid Tom Biegler about 1963's Matango (dir. Ishirō Honda). There seems to be something about these monster movies that inspires monster kids to create, and Tom has created a 24-hour sculpt inspired by Matango. You'll have to listen to this episode to learn how you can win this Matango Mini Bust! Also in this episode, Larry Underwood (aka Dr. Gangrene) swings by for a game of the Classic Five, and Derek talks about two 1950s science fiction films he's watched recently - World Without End (dr. Monster Kid Radio #023 - Tom Biegler and the killer fungus of Matango, Part One

Artist and monster kid Tom Biegler invited Derek to his home theater to watch a movie Derek had never seen before - 1963's Matango (dir. Ishirō Honda). Despite having a lifelong love of classic horror movies, Derek's experience with Japanese monsters has been limited up until recently. Tom is helping Derek to expand his monster movie horizons by sitting him down in front of a movie featuring one of Derek's near-phobias - mushrooms.

Monster Kid Radio #022 - Reaction to Rolling Stone's Best Monster Movies of All Time, Part Two

In Part Two of Monster Kid Radio's reaction to the Rolling Stone article "Best Monster Movies of All Time" by Alexis Murphy and Julian Ring, Derek looks harder at the list of "twenty horror classics" and considers what movies should end up on a list like this. And just how hard is it to define the word "Best" when creating these lists anyway? Also, Derek's been watching a few movies - Manfish (dir. W. Lee Wilder) and Beyond the Time Barrier (dir. Edgar G. Ulmer) - and responds to the show's first piece of email feedback.

Monster Kid Radio #021 - Reaction to Rolling Stone's Best Monster Movies of All Time list

In mid-July, Rolling Stone published on their website the article "Best Monster Movies of All Time" by Alexis Murphy and Julian Ring. At the very least, the list generated some . . . minor discussion on various message boards and forums. What movies were missed? What shouldn't have been on the list? Why exactly is Swamp Thing on there? In Part One of Monster Kid Radio's reaction to this list, Derek looks at the twenty films that made Rolling Stone's list, agreeing with some of the picks, but disagreeing with others.
